Yes! TSS’ acrylic bulletproof glass can stop up to three shots from different handguns. However, not every sheet of acrylic glass can stop bullets. To be considered bulletproof or bullet-resistant, bulletproof acrylic glass must be tested by a third party to a bulletproof standard. At TSS, we work with a third-party to test our products to the UL 752 Standard for Bullet Resisting Equipment.
In this blog, we break down how bulletproof acrylic glass works, the advantages of the product, and common applications.
Bulletproof Acrylic Glass: The Basics
Acrylic bulletproof glass is a petroleum-based thermoplastic. A piece of acrylic glass (also called Plexiglass) from the hardware store is made of the same material as bulletproof acrylic glass, but it would not be able to reliably stop a single shot from even a low-powered handgun. This is because hardware store acrylic glass is designed and engineered to replace sheet glass, not give you bulletproof protection.
Ballistic acrylic glass offers protection from two of the most common types of handguns. This corresponds with the UL 752 Levels 1 and 2. Level 1 acrylic bulletproof glass can stop three shots from a 9mm firearm; Level 2 acrylic bulletproof glass can withstand at least three shots from a .357 Magnum handgun.
Bulletproof acrylic is not tested or rated to stop shots from a powerful rifle firing penetrating bullets. If you’re looking for a higher level of ballistic security, laminated polycarbonate glazing or glass-clad polycarbonate (GCP) offer robust protection. The Advantages of Acrylic Bulletproof Glass
In addition to being able to stop bullets, acrylic bulletproof glass has many excellent qualities. It is lighter and stronger than glass of similar thicknesses. It’s much more impact resistant than annealed glass or tempered glass. When acrylic does break, it forms large angular fragments that are less likely to cause injury.
Some of the security advantages include:
- Bulletproof acrylic glass is one of the most affordable forms of bulletproof protection
- Barriers made from acrylic bulletproof glass are effective crime deterrents
- Effective protection from handguns, the most commonly-used weapons
- A high level of visual clarity, so any barrier made from bulletproof acrylic won’t negatively impact user experience
- Acrylic can be altered in the field, if need be
- Acrylic can be an be made into other ballistic products, like package passers
Where Is Bullet-Resistant Acrylic Used?
Ballistic acrylic allows you to enhance security without sacrificing looks. It can even help make your entryway or workplace more attractive than it was prior to the installation.
We typically recommend acrylic bulletproof glass in:
- Financial Institutions: Banks and other financial service providers often choose bullet-resistant acrylic for teller windows, doors, passers, and to enclose meeting rooms and offices.
- Retail Spaces: High-value retailers, such as jewelers, choose bullet-resistant acrylic for displays and windows, combining visibility with security.
- Educational Facilities: Schools and universities looking to enhance campus safety often install ballistic acrylic in entryways and reception areas.
- Corporate Buildings: Companies may incorporate bullet-resistant acrylic in lobby areas, at reception, and to secure meeting rooms, particularly in locations with heightened security concerns.
- Government Buildings: Given the desire to both keep public servants and staff safe, and to maintain an open, accessible, and inviting space, many government facilities install ballistic barriers incorporating bullet-resistant acrylic.
Plus, in some contexts like financial institutions, acrylic barriers are enough to deter would-be assailants.
